Newborn calves have insufficient levels of antibodies and only ingest these important protective proteins in their first milk. This means that young calves need to be fed high-quality colostrum as soon as possible to develop a strong immune system. A digital refractometer determines the quality of the raw milk. The protein content of the blood serum is checked to determine whether the calf has received sufficient antibodies. Milk solids are also determined.
