Hay Master hay meadows produce an average of 10 to 12 tonnes (dry matter) of hay. In practice, much higher hay yields are actually harvested. The mix is specially formulated to ensure that it will produce well in a wide range of soil types and conditions. Even in dry areas, the grass in the meadow will be high – up to 30% more than on grassland normally used for cattle. A well-managed Hay Master hay meadow will produce high yields for more than five years.
Hay Master hay versus natural hay:
Natural meadow hay is considered healthy. In practice, however, this may not be the case. Natural hay comes from unfertilized land. Unfertilized grass has an unbalanced composition. When nitrogen (N) fertilizer is added, the grass produces protein. If insufficient nitrogen is given to the grass to produce protein, it will produce more fructans, making high fructan hay unsuitable for use in horse feed. Natural hay also carries the risk of containing poisonous weeds such as Jacob’s Cross. Hay Master has a consistent range of grass types which, when managed correctly, give predictable results, providing the quality of forage your horse needs. It is difficult to ensure predictable quality in a natural grassland wall.
